Croatia boasts over 1,000 islands, and Krk Island shares the title of the largest with its neighbor, Cres. Both islands span 405.78 square kilometers (156.67 square miles). Located in the northern Adriatic Sea, Krk Island is special. It connects to the mainland via a bridge, constructed between 1976 and 1980. You can also reach Krk by ferry or boat from various mainland locations or other islands. This guide provides essential visitor information and highlights the best sights on Krk Island.

Omišalj:
When you cross the bridge from the mainland, the first town you encounter is Omišalj. This charming town is perched on a cliff, offering stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. Omišalj is also the location of Rijeka International Airport, making it convenient for travelers. The town's history is evident in a collection of rock monuments known as Lapidarij, which dot the landscape. Nearby, you can explore the 5th-century ruins of the Mirine Fulfinum Archeological Park. This site features one of the largest early Christian basilicas in the Mediterranean. Don't forget to visit the Biserujka Cave in Rudine. This cave offers a unique journey through an underground world filled with stalactites and stalagmites.
Njivice:
Just a bit further along the road is Njivice. This small town sits right by the sea and is renowned for its fishing culture, olive groves, and cattle breeding. Njivice features a lovely marina and many beaches, making it a popular summer destination. Not far from Njivice is Soline Bay, located in Soline. This unique beach is made of black peloid mud, known for its healing properties. Applying this mud to your skin can leave it smooth and glowing. It may also boost metabolism and improve blood flow. For a comfortable stay, consider Veya Hotel by Aminess. This 3-star hotel offers spectacular sea views, a restaurant, and a bar with complimentary drinks during meals.
Malinska:
Continuing down the road, you will find Malinska. This slightly larger coastal town features a marina and beautiful beaches. While there, make sure to visit the DUBoak - Maritime Heritage Interpretation Center and the Haludovo Palace Hotel, an iconic abandoned building on the island. For a great stay, choose Hotel Malin. This 4-star hotel is right next to Malin Beach. It has a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and a restaurant.
Dobrinj:
Inland lies the picturesque town of Dobrinj. It is often called the “white town in the middle of the island” and celebrated for its kind-hearted residents. This community has a history of treating enemies with kindness, even during pirate attacks. Not far away, explore Gradec Castle in Risika. This medieval castle is known as the Rovoznik Fortress, showcasing a rich history.
Vrbnik:
On the island's east side, Vrbnik awaits. This old town sits atop a cliff overlooking the sea. Walk through Klančić, one of the world's narrowest streets. The town is also home to the Katunar Estate Winery, famous for producing Žlahtina wine. Wine enthusiasts can enjoy vineyard tours and tastings. Stay at the Design Hotel Verbenicum. This 4-star hotel near the old town enjoys stunning sea views and includes an outdoor pool.
Krk City:
Krk City is the largest settlement on the island. The city's central hub features Kamplin Square, flanked by the Krk Cathedral and Frankopan Castle. This medieval castle, built by the first Frankopans between the 12th and 15th centuries, houses Roman ramparts, four towers, walls, an atrium, and a cistern. The cathedral serves as a focal point for visitors. You can walk along the medieval fort's walls for stunning views of the sea and city. Nearby, find Valbiska and the Valbiska Ferry Port connecting to Cres Island at Merag. Consider staying at the Boutique Hotel Marina for a luxurious experience right in the city center.
Punat:
Just south of Krk City lies Punat. Once known for sheep herding and shipbuilding, it is now home to the island's largest marina. From here, you can take a short boat ride to Košljun Island to visit the Franciscan Monastery and Museum. Stay at Hotel Kanajt, a 4-star hotel close to the marina featuring a spa, outdoor pool, and a restaurant that was once a bishop’s summer villa.
Baška:
At the southeastern tip of the island is the popular beach town of Baška. This destination is famous for its clear waters and stunning mountain views. Before reaching Baška, don’t miss Zipline Edison. They offer an exhilarating canopy tour with ziplines through beautiful landscapes. In Baška, be sure to visit St. Lucia's Church and Museum. This location houses the Stone Tablet of Baška, one of the oldest inscriptions in the Croatian Glagolitic alphabet. For accommodations, consider Valamar Atrium Baška Residence. A 4-star hotel near the beach, it offers a spa, fitness center, outdoor pool, and restaurant.
